Softball Players and Parents,
We would like to inform you of the try out process and format for choosing our three levels of softball teams. Tryouts can be a stressful time, but it is our intent to create tryouts that are instructional, as well as, enjoyable. Our goal is to choose the best players for our program based on our collective experiences as softball coaches here at O.E.S.A.
Travel softball requires your commitment!
Parent involvement and participation is a critical requirement on every travel team. With your daughter’s selection to a team you, as a parent, are also joining the team. When determining your vacation plans or other activities, you will need to consider the team’s game and tournament schedule. We encourage girls to play other sports; however missing practices, and tournament weekend games can affect how much you will play, the position you may play, and your selection for a team the following year. Travel softball is a team commitment and continued absences affect the overall ability of the entire team! We will play at least 2 weekends a month during the spring/summer season.
Listed below are the levels and number of players per level.
14U Team-12 players that best meet the needs of the 14U OESA team. (Currently, we don’t have an 14u)
12U Team – 12-14 players that best meet the needs of the 12U OESA team.
10U Team – 12 players that best meet the needs of the 10U OESA team.
8U Team – 12 players that best meet the needs of the 8U OESA team. ( Currently, we don’t have an 8u)
There will be three separate tryouts. Some individual players may be asked to stay for the next team’s tryouts.
Your tryout will include, but is not limited to:
Physical Skills: Catching, throwing, fielding, hitting, bunting, pitching, speed, agility, sliding, and your quality of physical conditioning.
Mental Skills: Anticipation, intelligent reactions to game situations, ability to adjust, concentration, listening to instructions, demonstrating your knowledge of the game.
Attitude: Desire to do well and improve, coachable, displaying maximum effort, positive player interactions, and readiness.
**Each coach will meet or call individually each player/parent to discuss reasons for making or not making the team. This allows each coach to further discuss each player’s strengths and/or weaknesses.
Once teams have been chosen, each player in our program is expected to attend every practice and every game during the season. Except for an illness, an incapacitating injury, or other reasons for nonattendance should be communicated to your coach. Penalties for missing practices and/or games will be determined by this communication.
Choosing teams is a demanding, time consuming, and a delicate process that each coach in our program takes very seriously. The decisions we make are thoroughly examined with the “overall program” in mind. All coaches will have input into the final decisions made in choosing the three teams.
We hope that this information helps you better understand the softball tryout process. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact any one of us.
